Martin Thomas is a researcher, essayist, documentary maker and oral historian. A professor in the School of History at the Australian National University, his recent publications include (as editor) A Cultural History of Exploration in the Modern Age (2024) and Clever Men: How Worlds Collided on the Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land of 1948 (2025). His consultative research with communities in Arnhem Land also resulted in the film Etched in Bone (2018) which he directed and co-produced with Béatrice Bijon.
